Golden Gate Meadows 2012

With rain and thunderstorms in the forecast for this past weekend we took a gamble heading up to Golden Gate Canyon State Park and revisiting a campsite that we loved last year on Meadow's Loop.  Driving up to the mountain we were caught in a good bit of rain on the highway, the clouds continued to look ominous and we were worried about setting up camp in the storm. Luckily, as we arrived at the campsite the ground was still dry and Chris managed to set up a great shelter for us.

We settled in for a bit of dinner. With the temperature dropping from the 100 degree plus temps seen in Colorado for several weeks running we got the kids bundled up to stay snugly warm.

Not long thereafter the rain began a steady drizzle and we didn't think our Aussie friends the Schwabe family would make it up.  As the light began to fade we were surprised  and happy to see them arrive.  They got busy setting up camp while the kids got busy being silly.

As we settled in for the evening the down-pour began.  Luckily our shelter held up perfectly and we huddled under the tarp listening to the sound of the rain thundering down.

We remained optimistic that the worst of the showers would pass overnight and crossed our fingers that we'd have a chance to enjoy the weekend away.  Boy were we lucky!  The next morning we were greeted with some crisp air, but no rain!  In fact, we enjoyed a fabulous day with our friends.  The kids even completed a 3 mile hike on Snowshoe Hare Trail

After the mammoth hike we relaxed back at the campsite while the kids played.

While the rain began to drizzle again in the evening we enjoyed a fun game of cards under our shelter along with a nice dinner.  The rain certainly didn't deter from a great time with the Schwabe's!   As we headed back home today we couldn't leave without a stop at the overlook to the Continental Divide and a quick break at the lakeside.
